Welcome to Year Five...

Welcome to Year 5!

We have a jam-packed, exciting and challenging year ahead of us with a variety of topics and trips, including our residential visit to Thorpe Woodlands in Thetford!

The Year 5 teachers this year are: Mrs Dakin in Peterhouse class and Mrs Cole and Mrs Kitching (who returns from maternity leave after half-term) in Newnham. We also have Mrs Barber and Mrs Quinn-Nicholls  working with pupils in both classes. Throughout the term, Year 5 children will receive specialist teaching in  P.E. from Ms Bennett and Music from Mrs Bell.

We will be studying a range of topics from Earth and Space, The Stone Age to Iron Age, Australia and Politics and Parliament.  We will be making a visit to the Houses of Parliament as well as welcoming in visitors to our classroom whenever we can.  Our long term plan for the year is on the school website and, if the children have any books, artefacts or items related to any topic we are studying, they are welcome to bring them to school and share with the rest of the class.

Homework and Reading Expectations

It is vital that all children continue to read to and discuss texts with an adult on a regular basis in order to support spelling and develop a broad vocabulary. Reading records must be signed by an adult to confirm that daily reading has been done.  Children need to bring their reading records and reading books into school every day. Signed reading records must be handed in on Monday with five reads recorded, in addition to the spelling and maths facts homework tasks.

As well as reading, children will be given weekly spelling lists and maths facts to learn which will be tested on a Friday. Children are encouraged to practise their maths skills using both the MyMaths online activities and the TT Rockstars website.  Please do ask any member of the Year 5 team should you require help or clarification with the homework tasks.

If you would like to speak to your child's teacher, you are welcome to arrange to pop in either before the start or at the end of the school day.

We hope that the children are looking forward to the exciting year ahead as much as we are!

With best wishes,

The Year 5 team
