Year 1 Class Teacher

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer holiday. All of your children have settled well into their classes this week and we loved meeting so many of their teddy bears. We are looking forward to sharing some exciting learning this term, especially as our topic is Pirates! This week we are starting off with a Teddy Bears Picnic just to settle the children and give them a familiar topic.

We thought it would be helpful for us to make you aware of the following information to give you an idea of how Year 1 works. We will also send home weekly ‘Thoughts for the Weekend’, normally on a Friday, to keep you updated. Please read these as it is impossible for us to speak to each of you individually about what we have done and events that are coming up.

If your child is in Corpus Christi class their teacher is Mrs Dean, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Mrs Sirisena, Thursday, Friday. If your child is in Darwin class their teacher is Miss Smith.

Just a reminder: In Year One we have a flexible timetable with outdoor learning, PE and reading taking place throughout the week. Therefore your child will need to have in school every day:

  • A coat, even if it’s dry in the morning as we will be outside even in the rain.

  • A PE kit (containing shorts, a t-shirt (in their house colour see separate slip), trainers, socks and a tracksuit for colder weather)

  • Wellies

  • A sun hat

  • A set of old clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy for outside learning (in a named plastic bag)

  • A water bottle for drinking during class time (not juice please, this should be saved for lunch)

  • A lunch box and drink if required- please remember that Year One children are entitled to a free lunch

  • A snack in a named pot (these include fruit, cheese chunks or string, crackers, bread sticks – no yoghurt or Dairylea Dunkers). Please remember that Year 1 children are still entitled to a free fruit or vegetable snack provided by the government.

Year 1 is slightly different to Reception in how we choose the children’s reading books. In fact, we won’t be choosing them at all! To encourage a love of reading the children will be choosing their own books, from a selection we have made, which will be at the correct level for them. They will be allowed to do this every day. Sometimes they may forget or may decide to read the same book again. This is fine, although if it happens frequently let us know. It is important during this year that the children become confident, fluent readers. We will be rewarding children who read at home to encourage them to read more, as this really helps them, so please encourage them as well. We do ask that all children read at least 4 times a week (2 of these sessions can be phonic based). The children will also have a weekly library session and bring home a library book. Please keep all books (when they’re not being read) in their book bags, as we will have to charge for books that are not returned.

In Year One we greatly encourage independence in the children. This is why we ask that you say goodbye to your child on the playground and do not come into the cloakrooms with them. It also eases the congestion in this small space! If you would like to speak with your child’s teacher please try to wait until the end of the day when we will have more time. Any messages to make staff aware of something that are not urgent can be jotted in the communication book which will be outside the classroom door each morning. We can also be reached via our school e-mail addresses which are listed at the end of this letter.

We will be introducing Show and Tell on a Friday every week, children will be given an allocated week for them to bring items of their choice. In Year 1 we do encourage the children to bring some things into school. Anything that is linked to our topic they are welcome to bring in to share. However, we do ask that the children don’t bring anything particularly precious, or ANY TOYS into school as we can’t be responsible for any loss or damage caused to them. We like to share events with your children that happen outside of school. Maybe they have moved up a swimming group, started Rainbows or Beavers, gained a badge or certificate for something, or got a new pet. They often just tell us but we also love to see photos and trophies and share them with the rest of the class. Please send them in so we can make your child feel more special.

If you have any questions please pop in and see us,
